Every Step a Choice (2025–2026) Ongoing Project
Video documentary on the theme of control[EN]
In a remote village in the heart of the Alps, a man lives with his partner in an old house with thick wooden walls. In the 1980s, they spent a long period living in a mountain communal setting. The man, now retired, takes care of a small number of bee colonies that inhabit wooden hives he has built himself, placed on the mountainside behind their home. He often walks through the familiar surrounding woods and searches the sky for echoes of the past.

The blanket of snow covering the slope where the couple’s home and the bee colonies stand slowly gives way to blades of grass, which have rested all winter, and to the first hazelnut blossoms from which the bees gather their early nourishment. Inside his workshop, the man begins constructing a new hive to welcome a new bee colony when the swarming season arrives.

The short film aims first and foremost to tell the story of the reciprocal relationship of control that forms between humans and nature. By narrating the bond between a beekeeper and the bee colonies he tends, it reflects on the theme of human control over animals, seen through the lens of care and protection. Today in Europe, beekeeping has become essential to ensure the survival of a species crucial to the balance of the global ecosystem.

The theme of relationships between different species, the organizational structure of the hive organism, and the personal experience of the subjects involved has prompted reflection on alternative ways of shaping social relations, particularly by looking at communal living systems. The cooperative attitude at their core is an essential foundation for creating a network of mutual support that promotes the well-being of the human, animal, and environmental communities to which we belong.

In un isolato paese nel cuore delle Alpi, un uomo abita con la sua compagna un’antica casa dalle pareti in legno massiccio. Negli anni ottanta, hanno vissuto per lungo tempo in una realtà comunitaria montana.
L’uomo, ora in pensione, si prende cura di un numero ristretto di famiglie di api, che abitano in arnie di legno da lui costruite e poste sulla pendice della montagna dietro casa. L’uomo è solito percorrere a piedi i limitrofi boschi familiari e cercare nella volta celeste echi del tempo passato.
La coltre di neve che ricopre la costa dove vi sono le case della coppia e delle famiglie di api lascia spazio agli steli d’erba, che per tutto l’inverno hanno riposato, e ai primi fiori di nocciolo, da cui le api si riforniscono. All’interno del suo laboratorio, l’uomo procede alla creazione di una nuova arnia, per accogliere una nuova famiglia di api quando arriverà il periodo della sciamatura.

Il cortometraggio ha innanzitutto l’intento di narrare il rapporto di controllo reciproco che si instaura tra uomo e natura. Raccontando il legame di un apicoltore con le famiglie di api da lui curate, si affronta il tema del controllo umano sull’animale visto in ottica di tutela. Oggi, in Europa, la pratica dell’apicoltura è ormai essenziale per preservare la sopravvivenza di una specie animale determinante per l’equilibrio dell’ecosistema mondiale.

Il tema della relazione tra specie differenti, la struttura organizzativa dell’organismo alveare e la personale esperienza dei soggetti coinvolti, hanno portato a riflettere circa modi diversi di modellare i rapporti sociali guardando, in particolare, al sistema di vita comunitaria. L’attitudine alla cooperazione che vi sta alla base, è forma essenziale per creare una rete di aiuto reciproco volto al benessere delle collettività umana, animale e ambientale a cui apparteniamo.
